Abstract: this presentation will review the history of play therapy including its major theorists, historical influences and professional growth over the past 100 years. We will explore the origins of today’s major play therapy approaches. Participants will be invited to look into the future and consider where our history will take us next.

Both a playful review of the history of play therapy and a peek into play therapy's future, this presentation by Jane L. Johnson, LCSW, RPT-S will cover the origins of today's play therapy theories and concepts.  This workshop also meets the play therapy history requirements for the RPT credential and offers 6 hours of continuing education.

Goals:

Participants will:

1. Learn about major theorists whose work had led to the development of a broad spectrum of play therapy approaches.

2. Be familiar with the impact of historical events and major influences on play therapy.

3. Be familiar with the technology and organizations that influenced the growth and development of play therapy.

4. Be familiar with research and recent trends that will pave the way for new applications in play therapy.
